Gretchen Esther Whitmer (born August 23, 1971) is an American politician serving as the 49th governor of Michigan since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015. Whitmer was born and raised in Michigan, making her very familiar with security protocols.

A federal grand jury has charged six men with conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in what investigators say was a plot by anti-government extremists who were angry over her coronavirus policies. The six were arrested in early October following an FBI investigation into an alleged plot to kidnap the Democratic governor at her vacation home in northern Michigan.

“It’s a team that reflects the fact that America is back, ready to lead the world, not retreat from it,” said Witmer, at an introductory event at which hier selections stood on stage, at least six feet apart and masked.
Witmer said her choices “reflect the idea that we cannot meet these challenges with old thinking and unchanged habits.” She said. She also tasked them with reasserting global and moral leadership.
